Standing files can be used to store documents, folders or catalogs upright. This form of storage facilitates access and is often clearer than documents stacked flat on top of each other. For example, the labels on catalog spines can be read at a glance. This is also the reason why the sides of a standing file are usually slanted. For the dust-protected archiving of documents that are not needed so often, the upright files are placed on the shelf with the higher side visible, which can also often be labeled.
